Mark Martinek, Keeper of the Name
What follows is a tall tale told with affection. It is a fond portrait, not a résumé.
In the foothill country of Northern California, where oaks stand on golden hills and the night sky is still dark enough to count satellites, there lives a man who carries a very old name. It began with Mars, passed through a Roman soldier-saint, picked up a Czech -ek somewhere in Bohemia or Moravia, crossed an ocean, and landed with him. Mark says it MAR-tin-ek, and the hills have learned to say it that way too.
The legend calls him a homesteader of the Starlink era: one foot on real ground, one eye on the sky, where new satellites cross the dusk like slow sparks. He is said to think in long timelines, the kind of person who asks where a thing will be in ten years, not ten minutes. Technology is his weather, and he reads it well.
They also say he keeps this very Wunderkammer: a cabinet of card games, curious links and rabbit holes, open to anyone who wanders in. Visitors may play cribbage against his tireless computer, check where the space station is, or learn about the molasses flood. The Keeper asks only that you leave curious.
